Monrovia – The Liberian government, in collaboration with international partners, has unveiled US$25 million work-study initiative to support Liberian students pursuing master’s degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the United States. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti during her appearance at the Ministry of Information Cultural Affairs and Tourism.
Foreign Minister Nyanti stated that the program has the potential to redefine Liberia’s workforce and address key sectors requiring advanced technological expertise. “This program represents a significant investment in the future of Liberia,” she stated. “By equipping our young minds with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in STEM and AI, we are laying the foundation for a robust and innovative workforce that will contribute meaningfully to national development.”
The initiative is set to support 250 qualified Liberian students, who will be selected to join the program in the upcoming January term. The students will not only gain advanced education but also work experience in the U.S., with opportunities to earn an income while studying. This work-study model is designed to empower participants financially and provide them with valuable professional experience.
“This initiative is not only about education but also about economic empowerment,” Minister Nyanti said. “Participants will have the unique opportunity to work while studying, enabling them to gain practical skills and earn income to support themselves during their time in the United States.”
The program mandates that graduates return to Liberia upon completing their studies, where they are expected to apply their skills in essential sectors such as technology, engineering, and education. “The return of these graduates will be a game-changer,” Nyanti said. “With their expertise, they will contribute to strengthening critical sectors and play an integral role in driving innovation and sustainable development in Liberia.”
