MADINA, Saudi Arabia – A somber mood has gripped the Liberian Hajj Mission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the death of Ma Bindu Sumaworo, a Liberian pilgrim who passed away Thursday in the holy city of Madina.
Sumaworo, a devout Muslim and resident of Barkedu in Lofa County, was among the first group of Liberian pilgrims who arrived in the Kingdom on Wednesday to begin the sacred Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj.
According to Hajj authorities in Madina, she died peacefully in the early hours of May 29. Her Janazah (funeral prayer) and burial have been scheduled to take place in Madina immediately following Jum’ah (Friday) prayers on May 30.
The news of her passing has sent waves of grief through the Liberian delegation in Saudi Arabia and among residents of her home community in Lofa, where she was widely respected as a committed Muslim and elder.
The Liberia Hajj Mission released a statement extending condolences to Sumaworo’s family and urging all Muslims to remember her in their prayers.
“She was a humble servant of Allah whose devotion was evident in her desire to perform the pilgrimage,” the Mission said. “We pray Allah grants her Jannatul Firdaus.”
