MONROVIA — Two Liberian clubs head into make-or-break away fixtures this weekend in continental competition after being held to scoreless draws in their home legs.
Black Man Warrior FC travels to Benin to face Coton Sport in the CAF Confederation Cup on Friday, Sept. 26, while FC Fassell meets Algerian champions MC Alger on Saturday, Sept. 27, in the CAF Champions League.
Fassell’s Champions League Test
Fassell, nicknamed the “Soccer Missionaries,” impressed in their Champions League debut by holding MC Alger to a 0-0 draw on Sept. 20 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex. The Liberian champions need either a win or a score draw in Algiers to advance to the final preliminary round.
The second leg is scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. GMT in Algiers. Fassell departed Monrovia on Monday with a 48-member delegation, traveling via Accra, Ghana, and Istanbul, Turkey.
Club president Cassell Kuoh has pledged a $100,000 bonus if the team secures qualification, raising his earlier $60,000 incentive by an additional $40,000. Fassell qualified for the 2025–26 Champions League after winning last season’s Liberia Football Association First Division title.
Black Man Warrior in Benin
Black Man Warrior, meanwhile, left Liberia early Thursday for their second-leg clash with Coton Sport. Their first meeting ended 0-0 in Monrovia last Sunday.
Head coach Sam Chebli led the delegation despite reports of his alleged resignation following the home draw. Sources close to the club said Chebli had been criticized internally for the failure to win at home, fueling tensions within the camp.
Stakes for Liberia
Both clubs must win outright or force a score draw to progress on aggregate. Success for either side would extend their debut campaigns and boost Liberia’s profile in African club football, where domestic champions have historically struggled to advance beyond the early rounds.
