MONROVIA — Liberia’s Vice President Jeremiah Koung returned from Ghana this week, brushing aside swirling rumors about his health as supporters and dignitaries from his native Nimba County gathered to welcome him at Roberts International Airport.
“People will always speculate. You can see me, I am well,” Koung told a local cable TV reporter, smiling as he walked through the arrivals hall.
The vice president was greeted by a high-profile Nimba delegation that included County Superintendent Ma Kou Meapeh Gono, Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye, and other local leaders who expressed solidarity and offered well wishes.
Speculation about Koung’s health began last month after opposition figures — including Montserrado County lawmaker Acarous Gray — claimed he had been flown to Guinea for medical care. Gray later wished him a speedy recovery.
On Thursday, Nimba Senator Samuel Kogar, speaking on Spoon Talk, said he had reached out to Koung after hearing he had been rushed to Ghana.
“I have no issues with Vice President Koung; I only expressed my opinion about him,” Kogar said. “The last time I texted him was when I heard he had been rushed to Ghana, and I wished him a speedy recovery.”
The vice president’s office has not released an official statement about his trip.
