MONROVIA — The Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) has hailed Dr. Thomas Nimene Tweh Jr., founder and chief executive officer of the Country Man Movement, popularly known as “Original Countryman,” for honoring his pledge of L$200,000 made to the association earlier this year.
Dr. Tweh completed the commitment on October 21, 2025, during a brief ceremony at his Caldwell residence. The pledge was first announced during the SWAL Awards held on May 23, 2025, where he vowed to support the growth of sports journalism across Liberia.
Presenting the check on Dr. Tweh’s behalf, Christopher Neymar Vonziah, his chief of office staff, said the gesture underscores Dr. Tweh’s ongoing dedication to advancing sports development through enhanced media coverage and professional reporting.
“We firmly believe that when SWAL is empowered, it will create greater opportunities for its members to deliver high-quality coverage of our various leagues,” Vonziah said. “This, in turn, will strengthen the overall growth and development of sports in Liberia.”
Dr. Tweh becomes the third individual or institution to fulfill a pledge made during the May awards ceremony, following Tebeh Football Academy’s Trokon Roberts and the Liberia Kickball Federation.
SWAL President Varmah Kamara described Dr. Tweh’s contribution as both “timely and impactful,” noting that his consistent support continues to serve as a catalyst for efforts to elevate professional sports reporting across the country.
“This is more than a donation, it’s a statement of belief in the power of sports journalism to shape national discourse and inspire excellence,” Kamara said.
Kamara also urged other philanthropists, private institutions, and public officials to emulate Dr. Tweh’s example, emphasizing the need for collective investment in sports media as a cornerstone of Liberia’s athletic and professional growth.
“Dr. Tweh’s gesture reminds us that collaboration between civil society leaders and the media is vital for building professionalism and progress in Liberian sports,” Kamara added.
He noted that the fulfillment of the pledge marks a significant milestone in SWAL’s efforts to strengthen its programs, improve member training, and expand the visibility of Liberian sports through modern, ethical journalism.
