Monrovia – The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has faced another setback as the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) withdrew its membership from the coalition.
The coalition comprised the Congress for Democratic Change, the National Patriotic Party and the LPDP.
The LPDP, a founding member of the Coalition since 2016, reaffirmed its commitment in 2023 but announced its withdrawal on June 25, 2024. George Woodtor, LPDP’s National Vice Chair for Press and Public Affairs, stated that the decision was made by a resolution signed by over two-thirds of the National Executive Committee. Official notice of withdrawal was submitted to CDC’s National Chairman, Atty. Janga A. Kowo, as required by the New Coalition Framework Document of 2023.
Woodtor remarked, “As it stands, the party is pleased to inform the general public that on Saturday, June 22, 2024, the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP) assembled in an emergency meeting at its luxurious National Headquarters in oldest Congo-Town purely meant to take some major decisions relative to its growth, development, and stability.”
The LPDP’s reaffirmation aimed at governing post-election, but this goal was thwarted by the CDC’s defeat by the Unity Party led by President Joseph Boakai. Woodtor continued, “The LPDP’s purpose of joint governance for which it recommitted itself to the aforementioned instrument was undermined by the painful defeat in the said elections by the Unity Party of Former Vice President, Joseph Boakai, now President of Liberia.”
In a related development, Woodtor announced the indefinite suspension of LPDP’s National Secretary General, D. Eric Kpayea, by the National Executive Committee for making remarks on the radio that could harm the party’s reputation. “Honorable D. Eric Kpayea has been suspended for time indefinite by the National Executive Committee of the Liberian Democratic Party (LPDP), subject to investigation by an Investigative Committee,” Woodtor disclosed.
Deputy National Secretary-General Gbalee Gray will serve as Acting National Secretary General. Woodtor noted that Kpayea’s resignation has not been officially received despite reports of his resignation following news of his suspension. “We will also give a copy of the suspension letter of Honorable Kpayea to the press for verification because we are getting information that upon hearing news of his suspension over the weekend, he tendered his resignation on Monday, June 24, 2024, probably as a smart way of escaping the pending investigation. Let me be quick to clarify that as Information Minister of the party, a copy of the said resignation letter has not landed in my office for reference,” Woodtor concluded.
