MONROVIA — Liberia’s men’s national football team will face Benin on Friday, March 27, in an international friendly in Morocco during FIFA’s first international window of 2026.
The Government of Liberia will cover lodging and ticketing, while match organizers will provide local transportation for the Lone Star during the trip.
Friday’s match will mark the third meeting between the two sides, with Benin holding the advantage with one win and one draw. Their first encounter came on Feb. 3, 1987, in the West Africa Cup of Nations and ended in a 0-0 draw. Thirty-five years later, on March 22, 2022, Benin defeated Liberia 4-0 in a friendly. Liberia has yet to score against the Squirrels in 180 minutes of play.
Liberia will conclude its friendly schedule against Libya on March 31, also in Morocco.
The Lone Star has been without a permanent head coach since Mario Marinica resigned on Oct. 15, 2024. Thomas Kojo had been serving as interim coach.
Former Arsenal forward and Liberia international Christopher Wreh will serve as caretaker coach for the friendlies. Wreh has been part of the national team’s technical staff, working alongside Kojo and former head coach Peter Butler. He earned his CAF A License in March 2025 in Egypt, completing the program alongside fellow Liberian Kelvin Sebwe.
Wreh’s appointment has raised concerns among some football pundits, who have criticized the Liberia Football Association (LFA) for not officially announcing Kojo’s departure. Kojo led the team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
However, LFA Communications Manager Anthony Kokoi told The Liberian Investigator that Kojo’s mandate was limited to the World Cup qualifiers and has since expired. Kokoi said Wreh will oversee the team only during the current international window as the government and the LFA continue their search for a permanent head coach.
