MONROVIA — The 2025 National High School Kickball and Football Championship moves into its regional stage Wednesday, Sept. 3, marking one of Liberia’s largest grassroots sporting events.
Organizers said matches will be played in four host cities: Voinjama, Lofa County; Gbarnga, Bong County; Greenville, Sinoe County; and Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.
High school champions from all 15 counties will compete in this stage of the nationwide tournament, which has grown into Liberia’s most competitive interschool sports showcase since its launch in 2017.
Regional matchups
In Voinjama, hosts Voinjama Multilateral (kickball) and Free Pentecostal Global Mission (football) will face Bopolu High of Gbarpolu, C.H. Dewey High of Bomi and Sinje High of Grand Cape Mount.
In Gbarnga, games at the David Kuyon Sports Stadium will feature champions from Bong, Nimba, Margibi and Grand Bassa counties, including Sumo Moye Memorial (kickball), William V.S. Tubman Gray High (football) and Bassa High (football).
Sinoe County’s James E. Greene Sports Stadium will stage Region 4, with St. Paul Episcopal Parish High, P.G. Wolo High, Sasstown High and Green Pastures High in action.
Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, will host Region 5, featuring Mike Tuleh Wilson A.G. Mission, J.S. Pratt High and Tweh Jaiklay High in both football and kickball.
Montserrado County, which operates as a stand-alone region, has already concluded its zonal phase. Football qualifiers are Reeves F. Charity Senior Memorial, Highway Christian Academy, Howard Academy and G.W. Gibson High. Kickball qualifiers are Amos T. Warner, St. Samuel, Howard Academy and Nathan F. Reeves Charity.
The Montserrado stage was not without controversy. Sarah Doe High School was disqualified and handed a one-year ban after an investigation found it had fielded six ineligible players, clearing the way for Howard Academy to re-enter the tournament.
Organizers provide full support
National High School Sports, the tournament organizer, confirmed that transportation, meals and lodging for all participating teams will be provided.
“This championship is not just about sports; it’s about education, character and opportunity,” organizers said, emphasizing the event’s role in boosting school enrollment nationwide.
Road to the finals
Regional winners will advance to the national finals in Montserrado County later this month.
The overall champions in both football and kickball will receive $7,000, a trophy, medals and an international trip to Ghana or Nigeria. Runners-up will take home $5,000, while the Most Valuable Player in each sport will earn $1,000 and additional prizes from sponsors.
Launched in 2017, the championship now features more than 150 high schools and has become a proving ground for young Liberian athletes.
