The Development Officer of Grand Kru County, Joe M. Skepeh, has refuted allegations made by a supporter of the Unity Party-led government, Ambulah Mamey, that no schools have been built in the county despite the disbursement of government funds for such projects.
Mamey, a prominent socio-political commentator and supporter of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration, alleged on Facebook that an individual identified as Robert Tweah, who he claimed works for Grand Kru Senator Albert Chie, received US$300,000 from the government through the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) on November 8, 2023, for the construction of four schools in the county.
According to Mamey, the funds were channeled through Southeastern Solutions Inc. (SSI), a company he alleged is owned by Tweah, but “no schools have been built in Grand Kru County” despite the payment. He further accused Senator Chie of receiving US$123,000 from the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) for a separate development project that, according to him, was never implemented. Mamey also cited documents purportedly showing that NASSCORP transferred US$1 million to the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) through GT Bank on August 23, 2023, as part of funding for former President George Weah’s Pro-Poor Housing Project.
He claimed an additional US$1 million was later transferred, bringing the total to US$2 million, but said LACE has “no record of project documents” accounting for the funds. He further alleged that information from sponsors of the Weah administration’s housing initiative — specifically a Japanese grant h— indicated the project was exclusively financed by Japan, not by NASSCORP or te Liberian government.
In response, Skepeh dismissed Mamey’s claims as false and misleading, describing them as an attempt to distort the facts about ongoing development efforts in the county. “As the focal person for development projects in Grand Kru County, and having served in this position since 2018, I can confirm that Southeastern Solutions Inc., with support from NASSCORP and other partners, is currently constructing four junior high schools in the county,” Skepeh said in a press release issued Saturday. He named the project sites as Barfowein in Dorbor Statutory District, Daryokpo/Sasstown in Jrao Statutory District, Judeken in Grandcess-Wedabo Statutory District, and Weteken in Trehn Statutory District. Skepeh emphasized that all the projects are ongoing and “clearly visible,” urging residents and critics to verify the developments for themselves.
“We hope this information lays to rest all speculations about the works of SSI in Grand Kru County,” Skepeh said. The controversy has drawn attention amid growing scrutiny over how public funds are managed at the county level, particularly concerning legacy projects from the previous Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) administration. While Mamey insists that government funds were misused, local officials maintain that the projects are active and progressing as planned. Independent verification of the construction sites could not immediately be confirmed.
