Court lifts injunction on LFA elections

MONROVIA — The Civil Law Court has lifted a temporary injunction that halted preparations for the Liberia Football Association (LFA) elections, clearing the way for the vote to proceed as scheduled on April 18, 2026, in Maryland County.

In a statement issued Tuesday, March 17, the LFA said its Elections Committee will immediately resume operations following the ruling and will release a revised electoral calendar in the coming days.

“With the lifting of the injunction, the Elections Committee will now resume its functions and publish a new electoral calendar,” the association said, adding that FIFA has been formally notified of the development.

Legal Challenge Paused Process

The decision follows days of uncertainty triggered by a legal challenge from presidential aspirant Cassell Kuoh, who filed multiple complaints on March 10, including a petition for a preliminary injunction.

Kuoh’s petition named the LFA Elections Committee and several senior football officials as respondents, including Committee Chairperson Meo Beyan, LFA President Mustapha I. Raji, and Vice Presidents Sekou Konneh, Adolphus Dolo and Jodie Reid-Seton, among others.

Assigned Circuit Judge J. Boima Kontoe had initially ordered a halt to all election-related activities pending resolution of the case, warning that noncompliance could result in arrest — a move that effectively froze preparations and raised doubts about the election timeline.

Concerns Over Electoral Rules

Kuoh and his legal team argued that aspects of the electoral framework were flawed, citing provisions requiring the process to be conducted under LFA statutes, the Electoral Code, and regulations of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football.

They also challenged eligibility criteria mandating that candidates meet statutory qualifications and have no history of fraud, financial misconduct or misappropriation of funds.

Process Back on Track

With the injunction now lifted, the LFA says preparations will resume without delay, assuring stakeholders that the process will comply with both national laws and international football governance standards.

The April 18 election is expected to be closely watched, as it will determine the next LFA leadership and influence the direction of football administration in Liberia.
