Liberia finished sixth at U-23 wheelchair basketball tournament in South Africa

Liberia’s U-23 Wheelchair Basketball National Team finished at the bottom of the table at the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) U-23 African Championship held in South Africa.

The tournament featured six nations, with Liberia, Libya, and Egypt making their debut appearances in the junior international competition. Hosts South Africa, along with Libya and Kenya, had previous experience in the tournament.

Liberia’s only victory came through forfeiture points after DR Congo arrived late due to visa issues.

South Africa secured the championship with a 51-38 victory over Libya, earning a spot at the 2025 IWBF U-23 World Championship later this year in Brazil. Meanwhile, Egypt bounced back from their semi-final loss to claim third place with a 45-23 win over Kenya.

The competition highlighted the rapid growth of wheelchair basketball across Africa, with teams showcasing determination, skill, and progress throughout the event.

Liberia Wheelchair Basketball Federation President Lionel Johnson expressed optimism, stating that with continuous investment, Liberia could become more competitive in the sport. He also thanked the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, for supporting the team’s participation in the tournament.

The 23-member Liberian delegation has since returned home.
