Monrovia – The Liberia Council of Churches (LCC) has initiated negotiations to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis within the House of Representatives, a dispute that has disrupted legislative functions and raised concerns among Liberians. The LCC, under the guidance of its president, Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Reeves, Jr., held separate meetings with House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and a faction of lawmakers seeking his removal, aiming to bridge the divide and restore normalcy in the legislative body.
In a brief statement released on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the LCC acknowledged the perspectives of both parties, noting that each side advocates for accountability, transparency, and a commitment to the rule of law. The Council emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution, urging all involved to prioritize the welfare of the Liberian people and uphold the law.
“The Liberia Council of Churches respects the views from both parties and calls for adherence to the rule of law. We pray that each party sees reason to put the interest of Liberians first,” the statement read. The Council reaffirmed its dedication to accountability, transparency, peace, and national reconciliation as it continues its mediation efforts.
In light of the current impasse, the LCC appealed to the general public to remain calm and patient as it works toward a resolution. The Council expressed gratitude to both parties for their willingness to engage in dialogue and assured the public of its commitment to ongoing prayer and intervention to restore stability within the Legislature.
“We are committed to continuous prayers as we intervene to bring a fruitful end to this confusion,” the LCC stated, calling on both sides to work toward a mutually beneficial solution.
