Team Liberia Triumphs at International Bodybuilding Federation West Africa Championship in Accra

Monrovia – Liberia has secured a remarkable victory at the just ended International Bodybuilding Federation (IBBF) West Africa Championship held in Accra, Ghana, bringing home both category and overall honors in a powerful display of resilience and determination.

Leading the team’s success, Alonzo Harmon emerged as the overall champion, earning top recognition among competitors from across the region. The victory marks a significant achievement for Liberia on the international sports stage.
What makes this triumph even more compelling is the story behind it.

Despite representing the country at a major regional competition, Team Liberia arrived in Accra with extremely limited resources. The five-member team initially secured only two nights of accommodation in substandard conditions, with no access to proper nutrition or training facilities, critical elements for bodybuilding athletes. While other national teams benefited from full sponsorships, including hotel accommodations, meal plans, and gym access, Liberia’s athletes were left to navigate these challenges on their own.

In a turn of events that would prove pivotal, a private supporter stepped in to assist the team, providing accommodation, access to a gym, and daily meals throughout the remainder of their stay. This intervention ensured the athletes could prepare adequately for competition.

Against the odds, Team Liberia rose above these challenges and delivered an extraordinary performance, ultimately claiming the championship title.

The team is scheduled to return to Liberia on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, and there is a growing call for a national reception worthy of their achievement. Plans are underway to organize a formal former program to celebrate their success and bring national attention to their journey.

“This victory is more than a win—it is a testament to perseverance, sacrifice, and the untapped potential of Liberian athletes,” said a supporter of the team. “We must ensure their achievement does not go unnoticed.”

Team Liberia now faces upcoming international competitions, including events in Barbados in May and Spain in June. However, without adequate sponsorship and institutional support, their ability to participate remains uncertain.

Call to Action

Stakeholders, corporate sponsors, government institutions, and members of the public are encouraged to support Team Liberia through sponsorships, partnerships, and media amplification. Elevating their story can help secure the resources needed for future competitions and sustain Liberia’s presence in international bodybuilding.
