Monrovia – Ahead of the official kickoff of the basketball edition of the delayed 2024/2025 National County Sports Meet on January 21, 2025, the Liberia Basketball Association (LBA) has announced a new age limit for participants.
According to the country’s basketball governing body, only players under the age of 25 will be eligible to compete in the nationwide competition.
Speaking with The Liberian Investigator on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Monrovia, LBA Secretary General Calvin Diggs said the decision aims to encourage the participation of younger athletes and provide them with a platform to showcase their talents.
“By setting this age limit, it will give more young players the chance to develop and enhance the overall competitiveness of the event,” Diggs explained.
He added that the LBA’s decision will also contribute to the selection and preparation of players for Liberia’s various youth national teams.
“The National County Sports Meet, an annual event organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, aims to foster national unity and scout talents for national teams. The LBA must help to adequately support the development of young players and provide equal opportunities for them to showcase their talents,” he said.
When contacted, G. Andy Quamie, Deputy Minister for Sports, confirmed the age limit set by the Liberia Basketball Association and pledged to implement it.
“Every federation or association has its own rules that govern its participation in the competition. We are just the organizers, so we will work with the rules given by all associations and federations for the good of the National County Sports Meet,” Quamie stated.
The basketball component of the event will commence next Tuesday at the SKD Gymnasium in Paynesville City with the zonal stages. River Gee County will face Grand Cape Mount in the early morning kickoff, while Bong County and Maryland County will close the day’s action at 4 p.m.
