MONROVIA — The Liberia Football Association (LFA), in partnership with FIFA, has launched installation of synthetic turf at Bible Way Mission School along the Roberts International Airport highway, marking the start of a pilot project to grow grassroots football.
The initiative falls under FIFA’s Arena Project, which will construct two artificial mini-pitches in Liberia, each measuring 20 by 40 meters and suitable for seven-a-side matches. The program is designed to create safe, inclusive spaces for boys and girls to develop their skills.
Liberia is one of 11 member associations selected for the pilot phase of the global program, which aims to build more than 1,000 mini-pitches worldwide. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has championed the effort, citing the need to expand football access in underserved communities.
An LFA statement Tuesday said installation at Bible Way followed completion of the sub-base foundation. Work is expected to begin soon at the second site, Edward Beyan Kesselly Military Barracks.
In April, the LFA broke ground at the EBK Barracks, home to the Linda Thomas-Greenfield Preparatory School, which serves more than 400 students from the military community and nearby neighborhoods.
LFA President Mustapha Raji described the project as a milestone in Liberia’s football infrastructure.
“This is the beginning of a new pitch — a seven-a-side facility — for youth and adults alike,” Raji said. “It’s the first step forward, where we will move from just the pitch to providing lighting, and eventually expanding to a standard-size field.”
