PAYNESVILLE — Sports Writers Association of Liberia President Sports Writers Association of Liberia President Varmah Kamara on Thursday outlined sweeping financial reforms, digital transformation and expanding international engagement as major achievements of his administration in 2025.
Speaking at an extraordinary congress convened in line with the association’s constitution, Kamara presented both narrative and financial reports, reaffirming his leadership’s commitment to transparency, accountability and institutional reform.
Kamara said all SWAL financial transactions are now conducted strictly through the association’s official Liberian and U.S. dollar bank accounts, effectively ending cash-based and hand-to-hand mobile money dealings.
“This ensures accountability, transparency and financial integrity,” he said.
He disclosed that SWAL has introduced a digital database and online registration platform, enabling sports journalists to register remotely from anywhere in the country. The system, he said, has eased financial and logistical burdens on reporters who previously traveled long distances to regularize or obtain membership.
The association has also rolled out a mobile money payment system for dues and services, a move Kamara said has strengthened financial oversight while reducing operational risks.
Awards, decentralization
Kamara announced the revival of the SWAL Awards, a platform now recognizing excellence among sports journalists, athletes, federations and administrators nationwide.
He also highlighted decentralization efforts, noting that SWAL’s 39th anniversary celebration was held in Ganta, Nimba County — the first time since the association’s founding in 1986 that the event took place outside Monrovia.
Partnerships, rebranding
Under Kamara’s leadership, SWAL has undergone a rebranding drive that has attracted strategic partnerships with ArcelorMittal Liberia, the Liberia Football Association, Telecel Liberia, Winners Incorporated and the Dr. Thomas Nimene Tweh Foundation.
Telecel Liberia provided free internet access to SWAL members during the 2023–24 National County Sports Meet, while Winners Incorporated supported publicity for the tournament.
International engagement
Kamara said SWAL has expanded its international reach through engagements with FIFA, including discussions with FIFA’s Africa regional director, Gelson Fernandez, facilitated by the Liberia Football Association.
He added that ties with the International Sports Press Association have also been strengthened, disclosing a recent meeting with AIPS President Gianni Merlo and hinting at a major announcement in the near future.
Capacity building, welfare
Kamara said SWAL has conducted training programs in Bong, Margibi and Montserrado counties, with plans to extend similar initiatives to Maryland, Grand Gedeh, Rivercess and Grand Kru counties.
He also noted that the association has provided welfare assistance to ill members and supported others with professional documentation, despite limited financial resources.
Challenges ahead
Kamara acknowledged ongoing challenges, including the lack of a permanent SWAL headquarters following the relocation of the Press Union of Liberia. He said discussions — including with the Kuoh Foundation — are ongoing to secure land and construct a headquarters before the end of his tenure.
He also warned that members who fail to renew their accreditation annually will forfeit access to SWAL programs and voting rights.
Kamara concluded by calling for unity and reconciliation within the association, emphasizing dialogue, inclusion and collective responsibility.
He also congratulated five SWAL members accredited to cover the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, describing their participation as a milestone for Liberian sports journalism.
“While challenges remain, our collective commitment will ensure SWAL continues to grow and lead,” Kamara said.
