MONROVIA — Junior United FC’s legendary striker, David Nyemoh, collapsed on the pitch and lost consciousness just four minutes after scoring a goal against Young Rollers FC during the Grand Kru third division Liberia Football Association Cup final. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at the Barclayville sports pitch.
After Nyemoh’s sudden collapse, he was immediately rushed to the Barclayville Health Center by his teammates and concerned citizens, while the match continued.
Shock and heartbreak followed when news broke during the second half that Nyemoh had been pronounced dead, despite no immediate medical report detailing the cause of death. The match was brought to an abrupt end as fans and players alike rushed from the pitch to the health center, tears streaming down their faces.
Nyemoh’s death has cast a dark cloud over sporting activities in Grand Kru County, particularly in the capital, Barclayville. As the all-time top scorer for Junior United FC and a soon-to-be graduate of J.J. Dickson United Methodist High School, his untimely passing has sparked widespread grief and suspicion among locals, many of whom claim he showed no signs of illness prior to the game.
Reports indicate that Nyemoh had participated in a practice session earlier that day with the Barclayville Old Timers Team, a regular Sunday activity for local football veterans.
This is the first time such an incident has occurred in Grand Kru County. Health officials at the Barclayville Health Center have yet to disclose the official cause of Nyemoh’s death. His body has been transferred to Boy Solo Funeral Home in Barclayville for further arrangements.
