PAYNESVILLE — The Jordan Nwora Foundation Elite Basketball Camp returns to Liberia this week for the second consecutive year, with 100 players between the ages of 14 and 18 set to train in Paynesville from May 8 to 11 in a program organizers say is designed to develop elite talent and create pathways to higher education in the United States.
FIBA Africa Zone 3 President Retired Col. Sam Ahmedu said the four-day camp will accommodate 60 boys and 40 girls, with sessions focused on youth development, coaching education and modern basketball techniques. “This camp is intended to refine young athletes’ skills while also advancing local coaching talent through modern basketball techniques,” Ahmedu told journalists in Paynesville Thursday. He added that participants could benefit from life-changing opportunities, including potential scholarships to schools and universities in the United States.
Among the trainers is Liberian-American coach Fred Lymas, head coach at Shawnee State University in Ohio, who has earned recognition for player development and preparing athletes for college basketball competition.
The camp is organized by the foundation of Jordan Nwora, a Nigerian-American professional basketball player currently with Crvena zvezda in Serbia who has represented Nigeria’s national team, D’Tigers, including during the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers. His father, Alexander Nwora, was head coach of the Nigerian national team at the time.
Founded in 2020, the Jordan Nwora Foundation uses sports to empower underprivileged children through basketball camps and educational programs across the United States and several other countries. Since its establishment, the foundation has hosted 22 camps impacting more than 5,000 young people, while also donating shoes, clothing and school supplies to disadvantaged communities.
