WEALA, Margibi County — Indian business tycoon Upjit Singh Sachdeva, popularly known as Jeety, has broken ground for the construction of a free eye care hospital in Weala, Margibi County, an initiative aimed at addressing the rising number of eye-related health issues among residents in the area.
Jeety, the chief executive officer and new owner of the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC), announced that the facility will operate under the New Eye Care Center and will provide free eye care and surgical services. He said the hospital will treat both common eye conditions and more serious ailments such as cataracts and glaucoma, which are widespread in the region.
“We will bring experienced eye doctors from the Liberia Eye Center to conduct surgeries on cataracts and glaucoma,” Jeety said Thursday during the groundbreaking ceremony. The event was one of several activities marking his 59th birthday celebration.
He noted that the project forms part of the corporate social responsibility efforts of Jeety Rubber LLC and the Salala Rubber Corporation. The goal, he said, is to support underprivileged Liberians who are unable to afford critical health services.
The initiative follows a successful free eye treatment outreach that Jeety launched in September 2024. That program benefited more than 400 people in Weala, with 122 individuals referred to the JFK New Eye Center for surgical operations. Many of those patients have since regained their sight after suffering from partial blindness.
Jeety said the new eye center is expected to begin operations within the next three to four months to meet the growing demand for eye care services in the community.
