MONROVIA— Former FC Fassell title-winning coach Ivan Minnaert has been linked with a sensational return to the Liberian giants, with discussions reportedly ongoing between the Belgian tactician and the club over a possible reunion.
Although no official announcement has been made, indications suggest that the former championship-winning coach could make a dramatic comeback to the club he guided to one of the most successful campaigns in its recent history.
Minnaert previously led the “Missionaries” to the 2024-25 Liberia Football Association First Division League title in his only season in charge, ending the club’s long wait for domestic glory. He later departed the club due to personal reasons.
The experienced Belgian coach is currently available after parting ways with Ugandan champions Vipers SC. The club announced on Sunday that it had mutually agreed to end its working relationship with Minnaert following the expiration of his contract.
“Vipers Sports Club is pleased to announce that it has mutually parted ways with head coach Ivan Minnaert after the expiry of his contract. The club appreciates Minnaert’s dedicated service and professionalism to Vipers SC and wishes him the best in his career path,” the club said in a statement.
Minnaert leaves Uganda after a successful spell in which he guided the Venoms to their eighth league championship. Despite winning the title, questions surrounding the team’s style of play contributed to the club’s decision not to extend his stay.
His potential return comes after the departure of Italian coach Fabio López, whose short but impactful tenure restored competitiveness and stability at FC Fassell.
López arrived at Fassell in November 2025 on a one-year contract, replacing Bosnian-Australian coach Amir Alagić, who was dismissed following a difficult start to the 2025-26 campaign.
Under López, FC Fassell transformed into one of Liberia’s most organized defensive teams. The club recorded 15 clean sheets and conceded just two goals in his opening 12 matches. Despite operating with only 16 registered players because of transfer restrictions and facing a prolonged shortage of available goalkeepers, López guided the team from ninth place to a third-place finish.
He was also credited with revitalizing several young talents, including helping midfielder Josiah Cea earn a return to the Liberian national team setup.
In an emotional farewell message to supporters, López reflected on the journey he shared with the club.
“On Nov. 11, 2025, the president asked us to restore the pride, the name and the dignity of the club. We did it — from ninth place in the table to third place. Amazing job,” López wrote.
He thanked the players, staff and supporters for their dedication and urged the squad to remain disciplined and humble.
“Talent can open a door, but humility, sacrifice and mentality are what allow you to stay at the highest levels,” López said.
With López’s departure, FC Fassell now faces a crucial decision as preparations for the 2026-27 season begin. Should negotiations progress positively, Minnaert’s return could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Missionaries as they seek to challenge for domestic honors once again.
