GARDNERSVILLE — The Bettomax Champions Cup will culminate Sunday with Heaven XI facing Bea Mountain in a highly anticipated final after both sides sealed dramatic semifinal victories.
Bea Mountain advanced Thursday with a 3-2 win over Freeport FC at Tusa Field. Liberia U-20 forward Ralph Weah, on loan from Tebeh Football Academy, struck the decisive goal late, curling in from the edge of the area.
Fredrick Dennis gave Bea Mountain the early lead before Amos Sogbe leveled for Freeport on the stroke of halftime. Christopher Moore put Freeport ahead shortly after the restart, but Dennis equalized with a stunning free kick to set up Weah’s match-winner.
On Wednesday, Heaven XI booked their spot with a 6-5 penalty shootout triumph over Global Pharma following a 1-1 draw. Darius Garmondeh put Pharma in front before Joe Bloe equalized late to force penalties.
Captain Albert Swen, one of Liberia’s most consistent defenders, marshaled the “Messengers,” while teenage goalkeeper Musky Junior emerged the hero, saving two spot kicks to send Heaven XI through.
Both finalists are guaranteed at least $5,000, with the champion set to claim $10,000. Global Pharma will meet Freeport in Saturday’s third-place playoff, which carries a $3,500 purse.
The Bettomax Champions Cup, staged under a three-year partnership between the Liberia Football Association and sports betting firm Bettomax, has quickly established itself as an annual preseason showcase for LFA First Division clubs.
