BARCLAYVILLE, Grand Kru County — The Grand Kru County Administration has announced a series of major infrastructure and community development projects underway across the county, funded through the national County Development Fund.
The projects, unveiled by County Development Officer Joe Sekpeh during a telephone interview Tuesday, are being implemented with an estimated budget of $186,000 USD allocated by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, in addition to $40,000 USD and 21 million Liberian dollars carried forward from the previous administration.
Key infrastructure projects currently underway include the renovation of the Superintendent Compound, the County Administrative Building, Barclayville City Hall, and the completion of the Parluken Administrative Building, the Norkia Clinic in Jorwah, and the Youth Center in Barclayville.
Other initiatives prioritized in the county’s 2024 fiscal budget include the construction of eight new hand pumps, rehabilitation of 16 existing ones across the county’s eight districts, and the layout and upgrading of Barclayville’s principal streets.
“These development initiatives are aimed at enhancing community welfare and improving the infrastructure of Grand Kru,” said Sekpeh. He praised President Joseph N. Boakai for demonstrating “a strong commitment to supporting the development of Grand Kru and the entire southeastern region.”
Sekpeh also disclosed that the county has submitted bids for additional road projects intended to ease travel and improve farm-to-market connectivity. Proposed rehabilitation routes include the road from Buah to Greenville in Sinoe County and from Buah to Kaweaken in River Gee County.
In a gesture of support for the city’s infrastructure push, the Ghanaian community in Grand Kru donated one drum of fuel and ten 25-kilogram bags of rice to assist with the ongoing street project in Barclayville. The contribution was part of broader community and diaspora mobilization efforts, which Sekpeh said are beginning to yield financial and moral support from prominent citizens.
Sekpeh commended the Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus for its “tremendous efforts” in bolstering the county’s development goals. He highlighted the caucus’s separate financial commitment to the Barclayville streets initiative as critical to advancing local infrastructure.
“The Government led by President Boakai is serious about improving the lives of every Liberian,” Sekpeh said. “We urge our citizens to work collaboratively with local government institutions and development partners to move Grand Kru forward.”
He also lauded residents for their patience and community spirit, emphasizing the need for continued civic engagement to ensure the success of the ongoing projects.
