Liberian striker Emmanuel Gono delivered a match-winning performance as Swedish side AIK Solna defeated Norwegian giants Molde FK 1-0 in a club-friendly held in Spain.
The former FC Kallon forward headed home a well-placed cross from Charlie Pavey in the 85th minute, securing his first goal during AIK’s pre-season camp. This crucial strike comes as a confidence booster for the 19-year-old, who has struggled for consistent game time since joining the Swedish top-flight side.
Gono, who signed a four-year deal with AIK in 2024, was introduced in the second half of the game and made an immediate impact. He previously started in AIK’s 2-0 defeat against Sampson Dweh’s Viktoria Plzen last season but had yet to find the back of the net for his team until this fixture.
The striker’s journey to European football was facilitated by Sierra Leonean soccer legend Mohammed Kallon, who scouted him during a visit to Liberia. Following an agreement with Gono’s then-club, Muscat FC, the team was renamed FC Kallon-Liberia before eventually being sold to Liberian businessman Cassell Kouh.
Gono’s performance in Spain is a promising sign for AIK ahead of the new season, as the young forward looks to establish himself as a key player in the Swedish Allsvenskan.
