ACCRA, Ghana — The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the death of 26-year-old Liberian national Austin Tengeeh, whose body has been deposited at the Lashibi Funeral Home for preservation and autopsy.
In a statement issued Monday, March 2, the Ghana Police Service identified the suspects as Vincent Adzikah, 38; Francis Amuzu, 44; and William Addison, 34. All three are in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations.
A fourth suspect, Enoch Mensah, remains at large, and police say efforts are underway to apprehend him. Authorities indicated that the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court.
Police Account of the Incident
According to the Ghana Police Service, preliminary investigations revealed that Tengeeh had visited his brother at an apartment with his girlfriend when the incident occurred.
Police said the apartment caretaker allegedly raised an alarm accusing Tengeeh of being a thief, prompting residents and members of the public to attack and assault him.
“A Police Patrol Team responding to the distress call arrived promptly at the scene, rescued the deceased, and conveyed him to the Sakumono Community Hospital for emergency medical attention. He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty,” the police statement said.
The police confirmed that the body has since been transferred to the Lashibi Funeral Home pending autopsy.
Warning Against Mob Justice
The Accra Regional Police Command cautioned the public against acts of vigilantism.
“The Accra Regional Police Command cautions the public against taking the law into their own hands. Acts of mob justice or unlawful assault are criminal offences and undermine due process,” the statement emphasized.
Police further urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activity through lawful channels and allow authorities to handle investigations.
Background and Diaspora Concerns
The incident has sparked concern among members of the Liberian community in Ghana and in the diaspora, particularly amid growing regional conversations about mob justice and extrajudicial violence in parts of West Africa.
As previously reported by The Liberian Investigator, Liberian nationals studying and working abroad have increasingly emphasized the need for stronger consular engagement and emergency response mechanisms to protect citizens outside Liberia.
The death of Tengeeh comes at a time when Liberian diaspora communities have called for greater collaboration between host governments and Liberian authorities to ensure the safety and legal protection of Liberian nationals overseas.
Liberian officials have not yet publicly commented on the matter.
Investigations by the Ghana Police Service remain ongoing.
