GBARNGA, Bong County — A woman identified as Ma Nyamah has been arrested by police in Gbarnga for allegedly pouring hot water on the genital area of her young niece, in a case that has triggered widespread outrage following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) confirmed Tuesday that the suspect is in custody and under active investigation.
Fatu Kromah, commander of the LNP’s Women and Children Protection Section in Gbarnga, told The Liberian Investigator that authorities are prioritizing the condition of the child, who is currently receiving treatment at C.B. Dunbar Hospital.
“The suspect is in our custody and we have launched a full-scale investigation,” Kromah said. “At this moment, our primary concern is the condition of the child, who is receiving medical attention.”
Police say further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
Preliminary findings suggest the alleged assault may have occurred in Monrovia before the child was later taken to Gbarnga. Investigators say the suspect is accused of carrying out the act while her husband was in the bathroom. The victim is reportedly the daughter of the suspect’s sister-in-law.
Authorities say no clear motive has yet been established, and the suspect has not provided a substantive explanation for the alleged act.
The case gained public attention after a video surfaced online showing the child’s injuries. The footage is believed to have been recorded by a neighbor prior to the victim being transported to Gbarnga, where the suspect had been residing along Dementa Road while seeking medical care for the child.
Family sources have alleged that the suspect admitted to the act, though police have not publicly confirmed that claim.
The case has drawn heightened public sympathy due to the child’s background. Sources say the victim lost her mother several years ago in an electrocution incident in Gbarnga involving an exposed electric wire.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing, with the case expected to proceed to court upon completion of preliminary findings.
