Monrovia – The General Auditing Commission (GAC) of Liberia and the Swedish National Audit Office (SNAO) have officially concluded a Five-Year Project Document designed to enhance the GAC’s capacity to conduct efficient and professional audits in line with international standards. The document was signed and presented today, September 4, 2024, during a ceremony held at the GAC headquarters in Monrovia.
This project marks a significant step in operationalizing the capacity-building initiatives outlined in the recently signed Five-Year Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions. The initiative aims to equip the GAC with the necessary skills and tools to elevate its audit processes and outputs, ultimately fostering greater accountability and transparency in Liberia’s public financial management.
Isabelle Berglund, Senior International Advisor of the SNAO and the project’s lead focal person, emphasized the commitment of both organizations to fully implement the project. She urged all parties involved to “roll up their sleeves” and work diligently towards achieving the set goals.
In his remarks, Auditor General P. Garswa Jackson, Sr. expressed gratitude to his Swedish counterpart, Helena Lindberg, for her unwavering support throughout the process leading to the completion and signing of the Project Document. He highlighted that the project would significantly boost the GAC’s audit capabilities, aligning them more closely with international auditing standards.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Kerstin Jonesson Cisse, Deputy Head of Mission at the Swedish Embassy near Monrovia, and Dag Levin Sparr, Deputy Director of International Affairs at the SNAO, who participated online. Also present were the three Deputy Auditors General and other senior management members of the GAC.
