CAPITOL HILL, Monrovia — Former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa is stepping away from legislative duties for two months, citing medical reasons and a planned visit to his Grand Kru constituency, according to an official communication submitted to the House of Representatives.
In a letter dated May 15, 2025, addressed to Chief Clerk Mildred N. Sayon, Koffa, who represents Grand Kru County District No. 2, informed the House that his leave will cover both medical attention and constituency outreach.
“Please be informed that I will be on medical leave and constituency visit for approximately two months,” Koffa wrote.
He requested that his communication be formally extended to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah, and all members of the 55th Legislature. The Chief Clerk’s Office confirmed receipt of the letter and informed the full plenary, noting the correspondence for the official record.
This marks Koffa’s first extended absence from the Capitol since he resigned as Speaker following a vote of no confidence by his colleagues earlier this year.
Although the letter did not detail his medical condition, sources close to the Grand Kru lawmaker said the break will allow him to prioritize his health while engaging more directly with constituents in his southeastern district.
Koffa, a senior member of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), continues to wield influence in the Legislature despite his recent ouster from the Speaker’s chair. Known for pushing major legislative reforms and maintaining strong control over House proceedings, his departure left a noticeable gap in the body’s leadership structure.
