Two-time National County Sports Meet–winning coach Muctaar Fofana is under pressure after Grand Bassa County opened the 2025–26 National County Sports Meet with a 3-1 loss to defending champion Lofa County.
The defeat leaves the Gbehzohn Boys in a difficult position in Group C, especially after Grand Cape Mount edged Grand Gedeh 2-1 in the opening match Sunday at the Doris Williams Stadium.
Lofa took an early lead before Grand Bassa responded quickly to level the score. However, the defending champions regained control and dominated the remainder of the match to secure the 3-1 victory, disappointing thousands of Bassa supporters in attendance.
Fofana, who won two County Meet titles with Nimba County, joined Grand Bassa this year amid high expectations for a strong campaign.
Grand Bassa must defeat Grand Cape Mount at the Doris Williams Stadium on Wednesday to keep its qualification hopes alive.
Despite the setback, County Meet standout Isaac Dayweah remains confident Grand Bassa can advance from the group.
“I can assure the Bassa people that we will qualify,” Dayweah said. “We just need to stay together. We lost our first game, but we can come back, qualify and even win the trophy. It’s football.”
Grand Cape Mount head coach Samir Kamara said he respects Grand Bassa but is confident his team will advance.
“Grand Cape Mount is not an underdog,” Kamara said. “I am obsessed with winning, from my playing days until now. We will win.”
In the group’s other fixture, Lofa will face Grand Gedeh needing only a victory to secure qualification.
In Group A, Grand Kru, which drew 2-2 in its opener, will face Rivercess at 2 p.m in Harper City. Rivercess lost 2-0 to River Gee in its opening match. Hosts Maryland will meet River Gee at 4 p.m.
In Sanniquellie, Margibi will take on host Nimba County at 2 p.m at the refurbished Tomah Seh Floyd Sr Stadium., while Bomi and Sinoe, both losers in their opening matches, will clash at 4 p.m.
One match is scheduled in Bopolu, where Bong County will host Gbarpolu County.
All fixtures will be mirrored in the kickball competition.
