FISSEBU, Lofa County – More than 350 nursery pupils at six schools in Fissebu, Zorzor District, have received free school supplies from a local youth group, which used money from its anniversary celebration to buy them.

The Fissebu Youth Development Association gave each pupil in the ABC and kindergarten classes copybooks, pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners and files. The schools were Sumo Kota Public School, the Zorzor Rural Teacher Training Institute Demonstration School, William Manna Johnson School, CAN Leadership Academy Lofa, Yanlor Public School and Gizziboiga Public School.
“We wanted to support what parents are already doing for their children’s education,” said Isaac F. Mulbah, the association’s chief executive officer.
“For now it’s ABC and KG, but keep praying for us as we plan to do more in the future,” Mulbah said. He said the group also hopes to encourage other young people from Fissebu to give back to their hometown.
School officials said the supplies came at a useful time, with enrollment up this academic year.
“I’m overwhelmed and very excited to have young guys like you coming back to do a distribution for my kids, and I think it’s a source of pride for us here, especially in Fissebu,” said Eileen Zain Gray, principal of the demonstration school.
Sia M. Thomas, registrar of Sumo Kota Public School, said the donation showed love for the community and would ease the burden on parents.
Alphanso G. Kalama, who chaired this year’s anniversary committee, thanked the people who contributed.
“Without your support we wouldn’t have reached this far,” Kalama said.
The association was founded Aug. 1, 2021. It is largely run from Monrovia and has organized clean-up campaigns and sports events in Fissebu.
