BUCHANAN — The Female Journalists Association of Liberia (FeJAL), in collaboration with UN Women, is conducting a two-day transformative capacity-building training for 30 journalists from seven counties. The training, focusing on gender-sensitive reporting on women in politics and public leadership, is being held in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County.
According to a press release issued Thursday, December 12, 2024, the training is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 13-14, 2024.
The workshop aims to equip media practitioners from Nimba, Lofa, Bong, Grand Gedeh, Gbarpolu, Bomi, and Grand Bassa counties with the knowledge and tools needed to challenge stereotypes and amplify women’s voices. It seeks to promote inclusive narratives that enhance public appreciation for women’s leadership.
The release highlighted that the training will raise awareness about women’s rights to participate in public and political life while emphasizing the importance of temporary special measures to ensure equal representation.
The initiative aims to address gender biases in media coverage by providing practical, hands-on training. Journalists will be equipped with skills to identify and eliminate stereotypes and discrimination in their reporting, ensuring fair and balanced coverage.
“The training will provide journalists with practical tools and strategies to effectively highlight and celebrate the achievements, contributions, and leadership of women, fostering positive and empowering narratives,” the release stated.
The two-day event will also encourage participants to develop stories highlighting women’s roles in leadership and decision-making after the training.
FeJAL called on participants to make the most of the training, describing their involvement as pivotal in reshaping public perceptions of women in leadership. The association emphasized the need for a media environment that supports equitable representation in politics and public life.
