MONROVIA — Liberian champions FC Fassell are in advanced talks to sign 39-year-old former Lone Star striker Francis Forkey Doe as part of their preparations for the upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.
Doe, who last played competitive football in 2020, has emerged as a surprise target as Fassell looks to bolster its attacking options ahead of the preliminary rounds of the continental competition. Club sources say reinforcing the front line is a top priority.
Despite questions surrounding his match fitness—Doe has not featured in a professional game in over four years and appears visibly out of shape—the veteran forward recently posted videos of himself undergoing intense solo training, sparking hope among fans that a comeback may be on the cards.
Fassell’s pursuit of Doe comes after the club faced criticism last season for signing aging Liberian internationals Zah Rahan Krangar and Solomon Grimes. Both veterans, however, defied expectations and played key roles in helping the club secure the domestic title.
While other attacking options are still under review, Doe is expected to arrive in Liberia soon to join the squad for preseason training. FC Fassell is reportedly set to hold its preseason camp in Egypt for the second year running.
Doe signed with Malaysian second-tier side Immigration FC in 2020 but did not make a competitive appearance. He previously enjoyed a prolific career in Malaysia, representing clubs such as Felda United, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang FA, and Selangor FC.
The striker also had spells in Major League Soccer with New York Red Bulls and D.C. United, and in 2009, he returned to Africa to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly. He featured in the 2009 Wembley Cup, facing European powerhouses Celtic and Barcelona.
Internationally, Doe earned 22 caps for Liberia, scoring five goals. His most memorable performance came in September 2015 when he netted the lone goal in a 1–0 win over Tunisia during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
