MONROVIA — FC Fassell has appointed deputy coach Matthew Saygba Julutweh as caretaker manager following the surprise resignation of head coach Ivan Minnaert, the club announced Wednesday.
Club CEO Cassell Kuoh confirmed Julutweh’s temporary promotion during a meet-and-greet event in Monrovia held to welcome the club’s newest signings.
“Our deputy coach will serve as caretaker coach until we finalize discussions with three other coaches we’ve shortlisted for the job,” Kuoh said.
While Kuoh did not specify a timeline for naming a permanent replacement, he urged players to resume training under Julutweh’s guidance and hinted that the Liberian First Division champions could enter the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds with Julutweh at the helm.
Minnaert, a Belgian national, officially resigned Tuesday—just three months after guiding FC Fassell to its first-ever top-flight league title. In a letter addressed to Kuoh, the players, and supporters, Minnaert cited personal reasons for stepping down.
“As I bring this chapter of our journey to a close due to personal reasons, I want to express my deepest gratitude to every one of you,” Minnaert wrote.
“It’s been an honor to be part of this mission.”
Kuoh described Minnaert’s resignation as “a major disappointment” but praised his short-term success.
“Thank you for your time, Coach Ivan Minnaert. The journey was short and sweet. Despite the challenges, we triumphed together. We wish you success in your next chapter,” Kuoh said.
In the same event, FC Fassell unveiled four international signings: Jatta Louis of Gambia, Diatta Cedrick of Senegal, Kolubah Abraham of Ivory Coast, and Ayoub Elkaouye of Morocco. Kuoh added that more foreign players are expected in the coming weeks.
“Our target is not just to qualify for the group stage of the CAF competition,” Kuoh said. “Erase that. My thinking is not limited — we are going to do mighty things and win the trophy.”
