MONROVIA — FC Fassell marked their CAF Champions League debut with a disciplined performance, holding Algerian powerhouse MC Alger to a 0-0 draw Saturday in the first leg of their preliminary round clash at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.
The Liberian champions, making their first appearance in Africa’s premier club competition after clinching the 2024–25 LFA First Division title, defended resolutely but struggled to create clear scoring chances in a cautious contest.
Alagic: “The pressure is on MC Alger”
Head coach Amir Alagic admitted his side lacked sharpness in attack but praised the clean sheet as a crucial takeaway.
“We were better defensively, but we need to work on set pieces and crosses,” Alagic said after the match. “At least we didn’t concede a goal. We’re going to Algeria with absolutely no pressure — the pressure is on MC Alger.”
The return leg is set for Sept. 27 in Algiers, with kickoff scheduled for 16:00 GMT. The aggregate winner will advance to the next stage of the Champions League qualifiers.
Fassell’s Travel Plans
The Liberian club is expected to depart Monrovia on Monday with a 48-man delegation. The team will travel via Alaska Airlines, with a layover in Accra, Ghana, before heading to Algiers.
According to officials, Fassell will spend five nights at the Holiday Inn Hotel in the Algerian capital. The club has budgeted approximately $80,000 for travel and an additional €30,000 for lodging and logistics.
Mokwena Praises Nimely, Fassell Setup
MC Alger coach Rhulani Mokwena praised Fassell’s organization and individual performances, highlighting captain Theo Nimely’s commanding display in midfield.
“He’s in the form of his life,” Mokwena said, comparing Nimely to Spain’s Sergio Busquets.
The Algerian coach also commended Fassell defenders Ayoub and Jacob for their resilience, Ndene Cisse for his intelligent movement, and Savage for his passing range.
“Champions League is always difficult,” Mokwena said. “Fassell have a good team, well coached. You can see a lot of preparation was done.”
What’s at Stake
Fassell will need at least a score draw in Algiers to progress, while MC Alger hold the advantage of playing at home in front of their fans. A goalless draw in the second leg would send the tie to extra time and possibly penalties.
For Fassell, advancing would not only extend their historic debut campaign but also boost Liberia’s presence in African club football, where domestic champions have often struggled to make deep runs.
