MONROVIA – After an illustrious football career, former Jubilee FC defender Patrick Mayango has announced that he will officially retire from active football on Saturday, February 1, 2025.
Mayango played for Jubilee FC for over ten seasons following the club’s formation in 2008. During his tenure, he helped the team finish as runners-up in the Liberian First Division in 2009, securing qualification for the then Premier League.
Before joining Jubilee as a left-back, he played for several clubs, including Young Soccer, Baby Lonestar, and Kusa FC, between 1993 and 1999.
As one of Jubilee’s vice-captains, Mayango was selected among top players from various clubs to represent Liberia at the 2014 Gothia Cup in Sweden. However, the team was unable to make the trip due to visa restrictions imposed during the Ebola outbreak.
While actively playing football, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from the University of Liberia in 2011. He later served as the Finance and Accounts Manager at the Liberia Airport Authority’s James Spriggs Payne Airport before traveling to Cyprus to pursue a master’s degree.
During his studies in Cyprus, he was elected president of the Liberian footballers’ association in the Eastern European country.
As part of his retirement program, Mayango announced a farewell match between Friends of Mayango and Cyprus All Stars.
The much-anticipated game will take place at the Invincible Sports Park, where fans will gather to celebrate his contributions to the team over the years.
Speaking to The Liberian Investigator on Wednesday in Paynesville, he shared his excitement about the event. “It has been a very good experience playing football in Liberia, and hanging up my boots is such a memorable moment for me,” he said.
