EU-Funded Electrification Project Expands Power Supply Across Buchanan

BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County – Electricity access is steadily expanding across Buchanan as the Government of Liberia, through the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA) and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), accelerates implementation of the €42 million European Union-funded Light Up South-East Liberia (LUSE) Project.

Several major communities and business corridors are now experiencing improved electricity service, particularly through newly installed streetlights, while households, businesses and public institutions are being connected to the national grid.

Communities benefiting from the ongoing electrification include the Benson River communities, Tubman Street, LOIC catchment communities, K-Plaza, Robert Street, Hotel Buchanan, the Fairground area, the Administrative Building, Kiber Street, the Liberia Government Hospital area and New Buchanan.

RREA LUSE Project Manager Josephus A. G. Sonniful and LEC Deputy Managing Director Thomas Z. Gonkerwon said electricity meters are currently being distributed to households as customer connections continue across the city.

According to the project officials, electrification activities will continue through October 2026, with customers connected during the current phase expected to remain on the system as work progresses toward full completion.

The project includes the installation of utility poles, transformers, medium- and low-voltage distribution lines, streetlights and service connections to homes, businesses and public facilities.

The ongoing electrification follows recent efforts by the Presidential Delivery Unit to accelerate electricity delivery in Buchanan ahead of Liberia’s July 26 Independence Day celebrations.

Funded through a €42 million grant from the European Union, the LUSE project aims to significantly expand electricity access across southeastern Liberia by connecting thousands of households, businesses and public institutions while improving public lighting and supporting economic growth.

With construction continuing across Buchanan, officials say more residential and institutional connections are expected in the coming months, bringing the city closer to reliable and expanded electricity access.
