MONROVIA – Edward Ledlum has spent most of his young life fighting for a place on the football pitch—and now, after years of setbacks and triumphs, the 26-year-old winger is making his mark on the international stage.
Born and raised in Brewerville, a community outside Monrovia, Ledlum began his football journey with third-division club Brewerville United. It was there that his dream of becoming a professional footballer started to take shape.
His breakout moment came during the 2016–17 National County Sports Meet, Liberia’s premier sports competition. Representing Montserrado County at just 17, Ledlum dazzled fans and coaches alike with his pace and flair. He led Montserrado to its first County Meet title in 63 years and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Climbing the Ranks
Ledlum’s standout performance caught the attention of top-flight Liberian clubs, including LISCR FC and Barrack Young Controllers. On April 12, 2017, he signed a three-year deal with LISCR FC ahead of the second phase of the 2016–17 Liberian Football Association (LFA) National League season.
Under coach Tapha Manneh, Ledlum quickly became a key figure in a historic LISCR squad that went unbeaten the entire season. The team finished with 42 points, edging Barrack Young Controllers by three, winning 10 matches and drawing 12.
In January 2020, Ledlum earned his first overseas move, signing a two-year contract with Energetik-BGU Minsk in the Belarusian Premier League. However, his stint was short-lived. Just one week before the 2020–21 season, his contract was terminated due to illness, and he returned home for treatment.
“I had to return to Liberia when my contract was terminated by the club,” Ledlum said. “It was a tough decision to make, but with the help of God and my family, I remained focused.”
Resilience and Redemption
Refusing to give up, Ledlum signed with Bea Mountain FC in September 2020. The first-division side, based in Kinjor, brought in five free agents—including Ketu Jerbo, Yaya Bility, Eugene Swen, and Mark Paye—to strengthen its roster. Ledlum became a vital part of the team’s campaign for its first league title.
His performances earned him a record move to Paynesville Football Club in 2023. With Paynesville, Ledlum helped the club win the FA Cup and qualify for the 2023–24 CAF Confederation Cup. He was later named Most Valuable Player of the 2023–24 Liberian First Division League.
Breakthrough Abroad
Ledlum’s resilience paid off once again in January, when he signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Algerian Ligue 1 side ASO Chlef. The move followed a strong showing for Liberia in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria. Though Liberia lost 5–1, Ledlum’s 25-minute cameo drew interest from Algerian scouts.
“I was honestly surprised when Coach Thomas Kojo told me an Algerian club was interested and that I would have to stay behind to finalize the deal,” he recalled. “My suitcase was already on the flight, and I was chatting with teammates when a private vehicle came to pick me up. That was when I realized God works in different ways.”
ASO Chlef finished the 2024–25 Ligue 1 season in 13th place with 34 points. Ledlum made 15 appearances and scored two goals in his debut campaign.
From his humble beginnings in Brewerville to competing in North Africa’s top league, Edward Ledlum’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and quiet determination—traits that continue to shape his rise in African football.
