DISTRICT TWO, Montserrado — Residents of the Du-Neezoe belt, comprising more than ten communities in District #2, Montserrado County, staged a peaceful protest early Tuesday morning to draw the attention of district lawmaker and the national government to the deplorable condition of their roads and the lack of equitable development in the area.
The protesters, including women, youth, and local leaders, assembled along major routes within the community, chanting slogans and displaying placards to express frustration over what they described as years of neglect. Many residents said the poor road network has severely affected their livelihoods and daily movement.
Residents noted that the protest followed repeated complaints about what they termed inadequate representation from their elected officials. They claimed that despite several appeals, little to no progress has been made to address their concerns—particularly road rehabilitation during the current dry season, despite multiple promises.
Speaking to reporters, the General Community Chairman, Johnny Livingstone Gbellai, described the road as a “death trap,” emphasizing that the protest was intended to send a strong message to the government.
“The road is completely damaged; it is a death trap, especially for pregnant women and schoolchildren. We have come to demand the government’s immediate intervention,” Gbellai said.
He further warned: “From now until Friday, if we do not hear anything about the road, the next time we return, we will remain here until something is done.”
Gbellai also expressed disappointment in District #2 Representative Sekou Kanneh, alleging that the lawmaker has failed to adequately respond to the needs of his constituents. He disclosed that several communications have been sent to both the lawmaker and the Ministry of Public Works, but no tangible action has been taken.
He called on the national government, through the Ministry of Public Works, to urgently rehabilitate the road linking Lonestar Junction in Jacob Town to the Rehab City View Market. According to him, the road is in a severely deteriorated condition, making transportation difficult for both pedestrians and motorists.
Gbellai further highlighted the burden placed on residents, particularly market women who struggle to transport goods, and pregnant women who face serious challenges accessing healthcare facilities. He noted that in some instances, poor road conditions have reportedly contributed to tragic outcomes, including the loss of unborn children.
Also speaking on behalf of the youth, Madam Cynthia Dahn urged the government to fast-track road construction efforts in the area. She encouraged residents to remain peaceful while continuing to engage national authorities in pursuit of a lasting solution.
Organizers, who agreed to wait 24 hours for a response from authorities, later suspended the protest, led by elders and youth of the community. As of press time, there had been no official response from the Office of Representative Kanneh or the Ministry of Public Works.
Residents say they remain hopeful that the government, district lawmakers, as well as philanthropic organizations and well-meaning individuals, will intervene to address their situation.
Meanwhile, the protesters emphasized that their action was not intended to create unrest but to amplify their concerns. They stressed the need for the government to prioritize infrastructure development in densely populated communities like Du-Neezoe, where poor road conditions continue to hinder economic growth.
They further warned that if no concrete action is taken within a reasonable timeframe, they may be compelled to resume their protest. Residents also called on civil society organizations and local leaders to join efforts in advocating for improved living conditions in the area.
All efforts to contact the office of Representative Sekou Kanneh and the Ministry of Public Works for comment proved futile as of the time of publication.
