RICHMOND, Texas — Alexander B. Cummings, political leader of the Alternative National Congress, paid an emotional tribute Saturday to fallen statesman Sylvester M. Grigsby, calling the late minister “a great mind and a dedicated servant” whose life embodied loyalty, patriotism, and service to Liberia.
Grigsby, Liberia’s minister of state for presidential affairs, died Aug. 9 in the United States while undergoing a medical checkup. His passing shocked Liberians at home and abroad, leaving what Cummings described as “a deep personal and national void.”
The funeral was held at Faith Methodist Church in Richmond, Texas, where Cummings — visibly moved — reflected on Grigsby’s long career and their decades-long friendship.
A Faithful Servant
Cummings opened with a verse from the Gospel of Matthew, likening Grigsby’s life to that of a faithful servant called to eternal rest.
“For if ever there was a good and faithful servant — to his family, to his friends, and to his nation — it was Sylvester,” he said.
A Distinguished Career
Grigsby served across several administrations as ambassador, minister, and chief of staff. Cummings praised him as a man of intellect and integrity who rose with ease through the highest levels of government.
“His service to different administrations, including that of his lifelong friend President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, was never about political convenience,” Cummings said. “For Sylvester, the work of uplifting Liberia was more important than any single party or individual.”
A Personal Loss
Beyond politics, Cummings described Grigsby as a confidant and counselor.
“I was privileged to know Sylvester as the man, the schoolmate, the friend, the supporter, and the deeply good human being,” he said. “His wisdom was matched only by his kindness.”
He recalled a dinner he and his wife, Teresa, shared with Grigsby and his wife, Cleo, only weeks before his death.
“It was a simple, beautiful evening filled with warmth and fellowship. Little did we know it would be our last supper together,” Cummings said. “That evening is now a bittersweet memory, a final gift of his time and presence.”
A Nation in Mourning
Cummings closed his tribute with condolences to Grigsby’s family, describing his death as a national loss.
“The nation has lost a great mind and a dedicated servant. But we have lost a dear friend,” he said. “His watch has ended. He was a good and faithful servant. He fought the good fight for the country he loved.”
Grigsby’s death marks the end of a career defined by patriotism and devotion to public service. His legacy, Cummings said, is one of wisdom, humility, and unshakable dedication to Liberia.
