Capitol Hill – The House of Representatives has summoned Josiah Joekai, Director-General of the Civil Service Agency (CSA), along with officials from the Ministry of Health, to appear before its Plenary on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. This action follows concerns raised by Nimba County District 7 Representative Musa Bility regarding the pensioning of 12 health workers at the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Care Facility.
In his communication to the House, Bility expressed alarm over the decision to pension these healthcare workers—including critical medical staff such as doctors and nurses—without immediate replacements. He highlighted that the removal of these personnel has created a significant void at the facility, which is crucial for providing essential health services to hundreds of patients in Nimba County.
“I have been informed by authorities at the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Care Facility that Mr. Josiah Joekai has pensioned 12 healthcare personnel without replacement, thus leaving a significant void in the facility, which has since impaired critical service delivery in the district,” Bility stated in his letter.
The lawmaker called for Joekai to temporarily suspend his decision until new staff members are appointed to fill the vacant positions. Bility emphasized that the current lack of adequate healthcare services is causing increased suffering among the local population and could potentially lead to unrest if not addressed promptly.
The Saclepea Comprehensive Health Care Facility, a key provider of medical care in the region, has been under significant strain due to the sudden departure of essential health workers. The remaining staff are struggling to manage the increased patient load, affecting the quality of care.
The House’s decision to summon both Joekai and officials from the Ministry of Health aims to address the immediate crisis and ensure that the facility can continue to operate effectively. The Ministry of Health will be asked to provide details on its response to the staffing issue and the measures being taken to prevent similar problems in the future.
This hearing is expected to have significant implications for how personnel management issues are handled within Liberia’s healthcare sector, particularly in rural areas where access to medical services is already limited.
