Monrovia—Christian Weah, the president of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) Upper Women’s League club Stages Queens, has attributed the underwhelming performance of the national team, Lone Star, to inadequate governmental support.
Mr. Weah joined numerous Liberians in venting his frustration on social media following Lone Star’s 2-1 home defeat by Equatorial Guinea in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
In June this year, the government approved over US$7 million for the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) in the 2024 national budget, of which only US$150,000 was allocated for National Football and Grassroots Sports Development, with a mere US$1,230 dedicated to grassroots initiatives.
“This defeat highlights a persistent issue that cannot be ignored: the underfunding of our national team by the Government of Liberia,” Mr. Weah posted on Monday, October 14, 2024. He expressed dismay over the lack of adequate resources and support for the players, who symbolize the pride and hope of the nation.
Christian Weah, a member of the Collaborating Football Stakeholders of Liberia, also pointed to the poor management of the national team as a significant contributor to the disappointing results.
“The continuous setbacks Liberia faces in its football journey point to systemic failures that demand immediate and decisive action,” he remarked. “The poor management of the national team by the Liberia Football Association (LFA) is a major contributing factor to this outcome, highlighting systemic failures that require urgent action to restore faith in Liberian football.”
Additionally, Mr. Weah called on LFA President Mustapha Raji to assume responsibility for the country’s failures and to resign immediately.
“We need leaders who are genuinely committed to the development and success of our football, ensuring that our national team receives the support it needs to excel on the international stage,” he concluded.
