MONROVIA – China has pledged to expand development and governance cooperation with Liberia, as President Joseph Nyuma Boakai pressed Friday for stronger ties in renewable energy, digital innovation, mining and private sector investment to speed the country’s development agenda.
The commitments came at a reception marking the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China at the Chinese Embassy in Congo Town, where officials from both nations celebrated the partnership and mapped new areas for cooperation.
Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu said the party remains committed to working with countries worldwide to improve people’s lives through cooperation built on equality, mutual respect and shared prosperity. China is prepared to deepen exchanges with Liberia and others on governance, party building, economic development and citizens’ well-being, he said.
“We are also willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with political parties of all countries, Liberia included, on the basis of independence, complete equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, so as to improve the well-being of the people,” Chengwu said.
The ambassador said modernization should not be the privilege of a few nations but a common aspiration for all.
“We are willing to enhance exchanges with Liberia and other countries on development concepts in the spirit of equality, mutual learning, and win-win cooperation,” Chengwu pledged. “Together, we will explore modernization paths that suit our respective national conditions, promote common development through mutual learning, and achieve shared prosperity through solidarity and cooperation.”
Chengwu also reaffirmed China’s support for building what he called “a community with a shared future for mankind,” stressing that global peace, development and cooperation remain essential in an interconnected world. He said China is ready to work with Liberia and others to advance the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative and the Global Governance Initiative, while promoting multilateralism and stronger people-to-people exchanges.
In a special statement, Boakai praised the Communist Party for transforming China into a leading global economy since its founding in 1921 and for lifting millions out of poverty. He reaffirmed Liberia’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing all of China and reiterated Liberia’s respect for China’s territorial integrity.
Boakai also acknowledged China’s longstanding support, including aid during the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, along with investments in roads, hospitals, education and human resource development. Liberia now seeks to deepen cooperation in sectors capable of driving growth, he said.
“Liberia seeks to deepen cooperation in specific sectors including renewable energy, digital innovation, mining, and private sector investment to support its national development goals,” the president said.
Boakai called for expanded trade, scholarships, cultural exchanges and stronger collaboration through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. He commended China’s “extraordinary achievement,” extended congratulations to Chinese President Xi Jinping and said he expected relations between the two countries to keep growing.
The ceremony drew senior officials from the Executive and Legislative branches, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners and the media. Chengwu closed with a toast to Xi, Boakai, the well-being of both peoples and the partnership between the two countries.
