Paynesville — Diplomats, senior Liberian government officials, including Vice President Jeremiah Kpang Koung, members of the Chinese community, and invited guests gathered in Paynesville on last Friday evening as the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Liberia hosted a colorful reception to usher in the Chinese New Year.
The celebration blended diplomacy with culture, featuring traditional performances that reflected China’s rich heritage while reinforcing growing ties between Liberia and China. Yin Chengwu, the Chinese Ambassador accredited near Monrovia highlighted progress and partnership between his country and Liberia.
In his keynote remarks, Yin, described the Spring Festival as the most significant traditional holiday for the Chinese people — a time symbolizing family, hope, and renewal. Reflecting on the past year, the ambassador pointed to China’s economic growth, diplomatic initiatives, and technological progress as signs of national resilience and global engagement. He also underscored the expanding cooperation between China and Liberia, noting improvements in trade, infrastructure projects, and diplomatic exchanges between President Xi Jinping and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
According to ambassador Yin, Liberia’s exports to China rose significantly in 2025, while several development projects — including overpass bridges and health infrastructure are advancing steadily in Liberia. He emphasized that 2026 will bring new opportunities as China launches its next five-year development plan and deepens cooperation with Africa through expanded people-to-people exchanges. “We sincerely hope China-Liberia relations will gallop forward with greater success in the Year of the Horse,” the ambassador declared while proposing a toast to peace, prosperity, and friendship.
Vice President Koung Praises China’s Development Model
Speaking on behalf of the Liberian government, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung hailed China’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse, describing its growth as one of the defining stories of modern development. He praised China’s role in Liberia’s infrastructure expansion, education support, and investment partnerships, calling the relationship “strategic, respectful, and mutually beneficial.”
The Vice President also encouraged deeper collaboration in trade, agriculture, technology, and energy, noting that Liberia hopes to see additional infrastructure projects, including bridges and educational institutions, supported through the partnership. “The bond between Liberia and China must continue to grow deeper, stronger, and more impactful for generations to come,” Koung said.
Celebration of Culture and Cooperation
Beyond speeches, the reception served as a platform for cultural diplomacy, strengthening links between the Chinese community and Liberian officials. The event highlighted not only shared economic interests but also growing social and cultural exchanges between the two countries. As guests raised their glasses in celebration, the evening underscored a central message: that the China–Liberia partnership continues to evolve from diplomatic cooperation into a broader relationship grounded in development, culture, and shared aspirations.
