Pleebo City, Maryland County — A four-year-old girl died early Sunday after coming into contact with an exposed electrical outlet inside a residence in Pleebo City, prompting a police investigation into possible negligence and household safety conditions.
The child, identified only as Kelvina, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident, which occurred in Zone 5 of the city on Feb. 1.
The Liberia National Police (LNP) said its Crime Services Department has launched an investigation in collaboration with local authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Incident Details
According to family and community sources, the child had been left asleep on a mat inside the house while her caretaker attended church. Investigators believe the girl later woke up and accidentally touched a live electrical receptacle connected to an active power source.
A community member who attempted to rescue the child was also electrocuted during the incident but survived, residents said.
Police said the investigation will establish whether safety lapses or environmental hazards inside the home contributed to the fatality.
Living Arrangements, Community Concerns
Residents said the child had been living under the care of her aunt while her mother traveled outside Liberia in search of employment opportunities.
Community members alleged that the house contained exposed electrical wiring that had posed a longstanding risk, particularly to children. They said the danger had been observed prior to the incident but was not addressed.
Police said such claims are being reviewed as part of the investigation.
Power Utility Clarifies Role
In response to public concern following the incident, LIBENERGY clarified that its operational mandate covers electricity generation and major distribution infrastructure, not internal household wiring or private electrical installations.
The utility said responsibility for internal wiring rests with property owners and occupants, urging the public to ensure installations meet basic safety standards.
Investigation Ongoing
The LNP confirmed that the child’s caretaker is being questioned as part of routine investigative procedures. Authorities emphasized that no conclusions have been reached and that findings will guide any further legal action.
Community leaders have renewed calls for public education on electrical safety in residential homes, particularly in areas with aging or informal wiring systems.
Police said additional updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
