GANTA, Nimba County — After months of renovation, the Ministry of National Defense has announced the near completion of Camp Grant Military Barracks in Sanniquillie, Nimba County, with formal dedication expected before Liberia’s July 26 Independence Day celebrations.
The project marks a significant step in the Defense Ministry’s broader effort to reclaim and rehabilitate its abandoned properties across the country. Camp Grant, once overrun by squatters and used as a makeshift market, had been left in a state of disrepair for years.
In October 2024, following an inspection by a high-level delegation from the Defense Ministry, renovation of the facility began. Prior to construction, the ministry issued public notices via local radio stations, warning illegal occupants to vacate the premises.
Nearly a year later, the barracks now boast 11 refurbished buildings and 62 residential apartments, classified into Type B and Type C accommodations. The facility is expected to house the Nimba contingent of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), who will be deployed to the region upon completion.
Over the weekend, a senior defense delegation visited the site for final inspection. The team included Deputy Chief of Staff Brig. Gen. Theophilus Dana, the 23rd Infantry Brigade Commander, Assistant Ministers of Civil Works and Public Affairs, representatives of the Office of Security Cooperation at the U.S. Embassy, and the ECOWAS Advisory Training Team (EATT).
The team also held meetings with Nimba County authorities to coordinate logistics for the upcoming dedication ceremony. While an official date has not been announced, the event is expected to take place before July 26, with President Joseph Nyumah Boakai — Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces — anticipated to preside over the dedication.
Defense officials acknowledged that some residents are still occupying parts of the property and urged local authorities to ensure they are relocated ahead of the ceremony.
“The rehabilitation of Camp Grant is part of our commitment to improving the living conditions of our service members,” a Defense Ministry official said. “Military barracks across Liberia have long suffered from overcrowding and neglect. This project is a step toward dignity and readiness.”
The renovation of Camp Grant was fully funded by the Government of Liberia and represents one of several infrastructure upgrades planned for the AFL across the country.
