MONTSERRADO COUNTY — Residents of Virginia Township, Clay Ashland, and Arthington in Montserrado County’s District #17 have long struggled with limited access to surrounding communities due to the lack of a bridge over the river connecting these settlements. For years, residents were left stranded or forced to use unsafe or time-consuming routes to reach the other side, making everyday activities like trade, travel, and medical visits unnecessarily difficult.
However, their challenges are finally over with the completion of a modern bridge that now links the major settlements. At a cost of over $20,000 USD, the bridge was constructed through the efforts of Representative Bernard Benson, popularly known as DJ Blue, who represents the district.
When our reporter visited the area, the residents expressed deep gratitude for the new infrastructure, with many describing it as a “lifeline” that will significantly ease their movement and daily routines. “This bridge is a blessing,” said one local resident in D. Coleman, adding that the previous lack of access had isolated their community for far too long.
Speaking at a gathering on Sunday, Representative Benson emphasized that the bridge project was part of his commitment to addressing the pressing needs of his constituents. “The lack of a bridge here had been a major issue for too many years. I’m glad we were able to come together and provide a solution that benefits everyone,” he said.
While the bridge marks a significant milestone, Benson noted that there are still other critical infrastructure needs in the district. “Electricity connectivity remains my top priority. Ensuring that every household in the district has access to power is next on my agenda,” he stated.
Residents of District #17 are optimistic that this bridge is just the beginning of broader improvements to their community. Many applauded Representative Benson for his proactive approach to addressing their needs, with one resident saying, “It’s a great milestone for us, and we’re hopeful that even more will be done to improve our lives.”
