Gbarnga, Bong County – Bong County health authorities have confirmed the first case of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) at C.B. Dunbar Hospital in Gbarnga.
The confirmation came from County Health Officer Dr. Jefferson Sibley during a live interview on a local radio station. He assured the public that the patient is responding well to treatment and that all necessary precautions are being taken to prevent further spread of the virus.
“Bong County has recorded its first case, detected at C.B. Dunbar Hospital,” Dr. Sibley said. “However, we are taking all necessary steps to prevent any further spread.”
He urged residents to remain calm, practice good hygiene, and follow all public health protocols.
“We are encouraging everyone to wash their hands regularly, avoid direct contact with others, and adhere to health guidelines,” he added.
The confirmation followed an earlier report from the hospital’s medical staff that a female patient was being observed for symptoms consistent with Mpox. Dr. Moses Beyan, medical director at C.B. Dunbar Maternity Hospital, said the patient has been in isolation for three days.
“Her specimen has been extracted and taken to the lab for testing,” Dr. Beyan said. “She will remain in isolation until results are returned. If negative, she will be discharged.”
He noted that a dedicated medical team is providing care and maintaining strict infection control protocols.
“We urge the public to remain calm as we continue to monitor the situation,” Dr. Beyan added.
News of the confirmed case sparked concern among residents, several of whom phoned in to the radio station expressing fear and calling for immediate action.
“I’m really scared,” said one caller. “We are pleading with the health team to do everything possible to stop this virus from spreading.”
Others urged health authorities to begin a vaccination campaign, even for those who have not had contact with the infected individual.
Mpox is a viral disease with symptoms similar to smallpox, though it is generally less severe. Health officials encourage the public to report unusual symptoms and continue practicing personal hygiene and physical distancing where necessary.
