Bomi County – The President of Bomi Community College, Dr. Zobong Norman, has expressed optimism about the college’s preparedness to host the proposed Western Region University in Bomi County.
The legislation to establish the university, which will serve Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu counties, is currently under review by the Senate. The bill, introduced by the Western Region Legislative Caucus, aims to expand access to higher education in the region.
Speaking on Thursday at the opening of a two-day faculty workshop, Dr. Norman acknowledged the challenges associated with such an initiative but reaffirmed the college’s commitment to making it a success.
“We recognize the challenges, but we are ready to work tirelessly to turn this vision into reality. Our goal is to establish a university that promotes diverse disciplines and academic excellence, making it a cornerstone of higher education in this region,” he said.
The faculty workshop, held in partnership with the Bomi County Association in the Americas (BCAA), aims to improve teaching methodologies and enhance overall learning outcomes. Faculty members are engaging in discussions to adopt innovative strategies for effective teaching, minimizing classroom disruptions, and fostering a culture of respect and collaboration among students and staff.
Dr. Norman highlighted the significance of the workshop in elevating academic standards at the college.
“This initiative goes beyond teaching—it’s about transforming the entire learning experience for our students. Over these two days, we aim to develop strategies that will ensure greater success for both faculty and students,” he added.
If approved, the proposed Western Region University would mark a significant milestone in addressing the educational needs of Liberia’s western region. It is envisioned to offer a wide range of academic programs and professional disciplines, empowering young people and contributing to regional development.
The faculty workshop is expected to conclude with actionable recommendations to improve teaching practices, setting the foundation for future academic excellence at Bomi Community College.
