Monrovia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has stepped up engagements with international development partners, holding high-level talks with World Bank Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer Pascal Donohue as Liberia seeks to accelerate economic recovery and expand critical infrastructure.
The meeting, held last Thursday, March 19, at the President’s Rehab Offices in Paynesville, brought together senior government officials and a visiting World Bank delegation to align Liberia’s development priorities with global financing and technical support.
Discussions centered on key sectors seen as vital to unlocking growth, including job creation, electricity access and sound economic governance.
Donohue reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s ARREST Agenda, the government’s policy framework aimed at stabilizing the economy, strengthening institutions and improving livelihoods.
He said the Bank is closely monitoring Liberia’s development trajectory and is prepared to scale up interventions that directly impact citizens.
A major outcome of the talks is the planned expansion of electricity access under the “Mission 300” initiative, a program expected to significantly transform Liberia’s energy sector.
According to Donohue, the initiative aims to deliver approximately 100,000 new electricity connections annually over the next five years—an ambitious target in a country where reliable power remains limited, particularly outside urban centers.
Donohue also acknowledged ongoing reforms by the Boakai administration, commending the government for taking what he described as “difficult but necessary” policy decisions to improve economic management and rebuild confidence among international partners.
Following the meeting, President Boakai expressed appreciation for the World Bank’s continued support, stressing that road connectivity remains a top priority for his administration.
He noted that improved infrastructure is critical to expanding economic opportunities and enhancing the welfare of Liberians.
The president also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and prudent economic management as it works to attract sustained international support.
Donohue and his delegation are expected to continue consultations with senior government officials, sector leaders and development stakeholders as part of their ongoing mission.
The engagements aim to refine priority projects, strengthen coordination and ensure that international support is effectively aligned with Liberia’s national development agenda.
