MONROVIA – The inaugural Bettomax Liberia Champions Cup is set to officially kick off Saturday, Aug. 23, at 3 p.m. at the Tusa Field in Gardnersville, with Heaven Eleven facing Blackman Warriors in the opening match.
The preseason tournament, which will run through Sept. 7, is a three-year initiative designed for the top eight clubs from the Liberia Football Association First Division League.
This year’s participants are Bea Mountain, Heaven Eleven, Blackman Warriors, Paynesville FC, Watanga FC, Discoveries FC, Global Pharma and Free Port FC.
The teams have been divided into two groups. Group A includes Bea Mountain, Heaven Eleven, Blackman Warriors and Paynesville FC. Group B features Watanga FC, Discoveries FC, Global Pharma and Free Port FC. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, with winners moving on to the grand final. Losing semifinalists will contest the third-place match.
Blackman Warriors, who finished ninth last season, replaced league champions FC Fassell, who withdrew due to preseason commitments in Egypt. The Warriors are representing Liberia in the CAF Confederation Cup this season and will use the tournament to prepare for their September doubleheader against Benin’s Cotton Sports. The first leg is scheduled for Sept. 19–21 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.
Heaven Eleven, runners-up last season, enter the tournament as one of the local favorites, with their eyes firmly set on the $10,000 top prize.
The day’s second game will feature Bea Mountain against Paynesville FC at 5:30 p.m. Bea Mountain, fifth last season, recently appointed former Watanga coach Cooper Sannoh to lead their push for a league title. Paynesville finished eighth last year.
On Sunday, Aug. 24, former champions Watanga FC will meet Free Port FC at 3 p.m. Free Port were invited after LPRC Oilers pulled out, citing lack of preparation. Later that evening, at 5:30 p.m., Discoveries FC will face Global Pharma in the final fixture of the opening weekend.
Bettomax is investing around $65,000 in the competition, with prize money totaling $29,500. The champion will receive $10,000, the runner-up $5,000, third place $3,500, fourth place $3,000 and fifth place $2,500. Each of the remaining three clubs will earn $2,000.
As one of Liberia’s leading betting companies, Bettomax said it is committed to raising the competitiveness of local football. The company also hinted at plans to expand future editions to include women’s teams, ensuring greater inclusivity.
