MONROVIA — ArcelorMittal Liberia has contributed a total of US$60,000 to Grand Bassa, Bong and Nimba counties in support of this year’s National County Sports Meet, reinforcing its commitment to youth development and community engagement in its host regions.
Of the total amount, Grand Bassa County received US$20,000, Bong County US$15,000, and Nimba County US$25,000. The donations were presented between Saturday and Monday in Buchanan, Gbarnga and Sanniquellie by Lance Gbarkonyon, ArcelorMittal Liberia’s superintendent for government relations.
Gbarkonyon said the support is intended to help the counties adequately prepare for the tournament and ensure effective participation.
“ArcelorMittal Liberia remains proud to support the counties that host and sustain our operations,” he said, adding that sports development plays a critical role in youth empowerment and social cohesion.
The cheque presentations concluded Monday night in Sanniquellie City, where the Nimba County Sports Steering Committee formally received its US$25,000 contribution during a brief ceremony held on behalf of the company’s chief executive officer and senior management.
Speaking at the event, Gbarkonyon reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sports advancement in Nimba County, describing the donation as part of a renewed and strengthened partnership with local sports authorities.
“On behalf of the CEO and the entire management of ArcelorMittal Liberia, I am pleased to present this support to the Nimba County Sports Steering Committee through the office of the County Superintendent,” he said. “We are proud to support both the male and female teams.”
He expressed confidence that Nimba County and the other beneficiary counties would advance to the final stage of the competition in Monrovia, commending Nimba’s recent performances and potential to emerge as champion.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the county administration, Peter Karngbaye, Nimba County development officer, thanked ArcelorMittal Liberia for what he described as its consistent and long-standing support.
“This is not the first time ArcelorMittal Liberia has supported Nimba County,” Karngbaye said. “It is a continuous process, and we are deeply grateful to the company’s CEO and management.”
Karngbaye said the funds would be formally turned over to the Nimba County Sports Steering Committee to support the county’s campaign in the tournament, expressing optimism about the team’s prospects.
Also speaking, Tomah Seh Floyd Jr., co-chair of the Nimba County Sports Steering Committee (2025–2026), welcomed the contribution and praised ArcelorMittal Liberia’s sustained involvement in county sports development.
“This may be the largest contribution so far, and we believe there is more to come,” Floyd said, assuring that the funds would be used transparently and effectively.
“With this level of support, we are committed to doing our very best to bring home the trophies,” he added.
The ceremony ended with renewed commitments from ArcelorMittal Liberia, county authorities and sports leaders to continue collaborating in promoting sports development and youth empowerment across Nimba County and other host communities.
